SAXQUEST EVENT – JEFF COFFIN – Wednesday Oct 27 – 7PM

Its with GREAT enthusiasm that I invite you out to another wonderful event at Saxquest. Next week on Wednesday evening (Oct 27) at 7PM we’ll be presenting a clinic with three-time Grammy award winning member of BELA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES and the DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, JEFF COFFIN. This is a very rare opportunity to talk one-on-one with one of today’s most in demand players.

Coffin rejects all labels and categories other than “music” and “musician.” He has traveled the world with the FLECKTONES since 1997 and with the DAVE MATTHEWS BAND since 2008, performing with musicians of all walks. Along the way, Coffin has absorbed an astounding range of influences. “Whether it be New Orleans Second Line, African music, Indian Ragas, folk songs, Alan Lomax field recordings, jazz, or funk,” he says, “the spirit and breath of the music is what I take away from listening and playing. It’s what decides for me whether I like it or not.”

Known for sometimes playing alto and tenor sax simultaneously, with a nod to Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Coffin seeks out the extraordinary in his saxophone sound and in his technique of improvisation. Reaching for the unique is something Jeff makes an integral part of both his playing and teaching. As a highly in demand educator, Jeff has presented clinics from Farmington, Maine to Perth, Australia and is also an internationally acclaimed Yamaha and Vandoren Performing Artist/Clinician since 2000. In addition to the Flecktones and the DMB, Jeff also leads his own group, The Mu’tet which takes it’s name for the word mutation, giving way to Jeff’s belief that music is constantly changing and mutating.

Its such a tremendous thrill for us to bring such a fantastic event to you! If you haven’t been to a Saxquest event yet, be sure this one doesn’t pass you by. Please print and distribute the attached flier to as many people you know who may be interested. Thanks for your support!!!

I hope to see you at SAXQUEST next Wednesday – Oct 27 at 7pm.

Other upcoming events include:

Victor Goines (virtuostic jazz saxophonist and clarinetist and member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) on Saturday Nov 13 at 11AM.

Since that time, his performances, tours and recordings have included playing with a virtual who’s-who list in jazz. From Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn to Red Rodney, Bob Brookmeyer and Jerry Bergonzi to Mel Torme and even James Taylor and everyone else in between.

Soren Moller moved to New York in 2002 from Copenhagen, Denmark to study at the Manhatten School of Music. In addition to being a formidable voice on piano and organ, Soren is equally gifted as a composer in both small group and big band setings.

Saxquest ERIC MANDAT Clarinet Clinic – Saturday Oct 2 – 2pm

I’m very excited to invite you out to another great event at Saxquest (see address below). On October 2, we’ll be hosting a free recital/master-class with one of today’s leading voices on clarinet, Eric Mandat. He will be here at the Saxquest shop starting at 2PM performing solo works with piano (~2-3pm) and giving a master-class (~3-4pm). The setting will be casual and refreshments will be served.

Eric is a leading composer and performer of contemporary clarinet music and a prestigious Buffet-Crampon USA performing artist. He tours world-wide as a soloist and chamber musician, presenting lectures and recitals featuring new American clarinet music as well as traditional repertoire. He’s especially noted for his facility and use of extended techniques such as multiphonics and microtones that leave even the most accomplished professionals scratching their heads and saying, “how did he do that?”. As a composer, Mandat focuses on solo and chamber works for clarinet. His compositions utilize extended techniques within a framework largely influenced by jazz and traditional music of non-Western cultures. The Clarinet Journal finds that his Aprocess at writing and playing is bound to leave any listener in awe. “One is constantly challenged and surprised by gorgeous tone color changes, exciting rhythmic action and 21st century clarinetistry”.

In November 2005 CD review Fanfare Magazine remarked that Mandat’s music creates “amazing technical effects for the instrument” that are “startling and eerie.” In a review in The Clarinet Journal of Mandat’s “Folk Songs”, the author exclaimed that “A composition of this caliber will most likely enter the performance repertoire as the representative piece of the decade!” Reviewing Mandat’s solo CD, The Extended Clarinet, in The Clarinet Journal, Michele Gingras wrote that, “In one word, The Extended Clarinet is astonishing”.

Please print and distribute the attached flier to as many people you know who may be interested. This is a great opportunity to meet and hear some of St. Louis’s top working professional musicians. The level of musicianship at which Chamber Project St. Louis performs is incredibly high. Their ability to take extremely challenging music and perform it effortlessly at an such a high energy level is riveting and really engages the listener.

This is one of those rare opportunities to hear something new and be blown away by the music; while at the same time supporting local musicians and a local composer. DON’T MISS OUT ON THIS ONE!!!
