New Items at Saxquest

Been a couple weeks since I’ve updated here, so obviously lots of new things posted up since last time! A few Selmers, including a couple very nice Mark VI tenors. We also just got in a healthy stock of the new Buffet E11 FRANCE model clarinet. This is a truly exciting instrument and for us sax players looking for a solid instrument for doubling, it is worth a look!

You should be hearing from us soon about a few more clinics and performances we’ll be having this summer.

Saxquest – Mike Lee Jazz Saxophonist Clinic – 2pm – March 28

I’m very excited to invite you out to another great event this Sunday afternoon at Saxquest (see address below). We’ll be hosting a free master-class with Mike Lee from New York who will be at the Saxquest shop this Sunday starting at 2PM. The setting will be informal and refreshments will be served.

Mike is one of the hardest working jazz saxophonists on the scene today. His musicianship is awe inspiring and his passion for jazz and the saxophone is contagious. Check out his web site here http://mikeleejazz.com.

Noted jazz historian Mark Gridley summed up Mike’s musicianship very well by saying:

His writing and playing exhibit a consistently high intelligence and concern for continuity and purpose. …I have noticed an assimilation of varied influences in the hard-bop mainstream, and a marvelous fluency. His command of the instrument is masterful, and he has refined an incisive posture within his approach to improvisation.

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet Mike and to get a first-hand glimpse into the mind of one of today’s great masters of the saxophone. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. We work very hard at bringing these kinds of events to St. Louis and remember, our enthusiasm to continue hosting such venues depends on how many people we get coming to check them out. Thanks for your support!!!.

Mike will also be performing with his quartet New Tricks live at Highway 61 Roadhouse Sunday at 7PM. The group features Ted Chubb on trumpet, Kellen Harrison on bass and Shawn Baltazor on drums (http://newtricksjazz.com).

The New News at Saxquest

We’re going to try something new in the “news” section at Saxquest. Every week we’ll try to post up some new things you may have missed on our website, and let you know what events are coming up in our shop.

This week we added some great vintage mouthpieces, so definitely browse through and see if you find anything you’ve been looking for! Also new on our website is the full line-up of Oleg key enhancers, you can view them by clicking on Key Modifications in the Saxquest Store. As always lots of items running on eBay so check those out too. Still lots of good deals on Vandoren reeds and mouthpieces!

We are putting together some exciting (and free!) clinics this summer at our shop so check back for details as they are finalized.

Saxquest – Free Concert Artist Series Kim Bock – FLOW Organ Trio – Feb 6

I’m very excited to invite you out to a great event this weekend at Saxquest. We’re bringing in Kim Bock and his Organ Trio from New York who will be giving a blazing performance at the Saxquest shop this Saturday from 11AM-2PM. The setting will be informal and refreshments will be served (see address below).

Kim Bock (SteepleChase Records) toured with Maynard Ferguson for several years and has a great voice on tenor sax. Drummer, Peter Retzlaff, (Universal Records) is a Zildjian artist and one of New York’s top call drummers. Organ player, Soren Moller, (Jazzheads Records) tours Europe every year with Dick Oats and does things on organ that are simply amazing.

This is a great opportunity to meet and hear some of the hardest working jazz professionals on the scene today working at an incredibly high level. The intensity of their performance and the interplay these guys have with each other really draws in and engages the listener. I’ve attached a flier with all of the details. Its free and open to the public. Also, they will be playing at the Gramophone Friday night from 8pm-10pm.

I’m delighted to bring such a wonderful group into St. Louis and hope to see you out either Friday at the Gramophone or Saturday at the Saxquest Shop. Remember, our enthusiasm to continue hosting these kinds of events depends on how many people we get coming to check them out. Thanks for your support!!!

Saxquest Free Jazz Clinic with Frank Catalano – Sept 30 – 6-7pm

Saxquest will be hosting a free clinic with Grammy award winning saxophonist, Frank Catalano this coming Tuesday (Sept 30) from 6pm-7pm. If you don’t know Frank, he’s a real high energy jazz tenor sax player based out of Chicago. He’s played with everyone from Von Freeman and Michael Brecker to Jennifer Lopez and Destiny’s Child. Its a real treat to have Frank here in St. Louis. He’s also performing at the Gramophone the same evening starting at 9pm.

Even though Frank is based out of Chicago, he’s never played St. Louis so this is a rare chance to check him out live. He’s got a lot of stuff going on in his playing and he’s definitely worth checking out.  http://www.catalanomusic.com
