ALL the NEW News at Saxquest!

There is lots of exciting news coming up at Saxquest over the next couple months, and it’s time to start the unveiling!

First and foremost, the Grand Opening of the new Saxquest West location is happening on Saturday, August 12, from 10am – 4pm. Our new location is located in Maryland Heights, MO, at 2614 Metro Blvd, close to the I-270/Dorsett Rd intersection (in the same plaza as Midwest Sheet Music and the Steinway Piano Gallery). Over the years, we’ve heard from many loyal customers that we should have a store closer to the west county area, for all of those who find it hard to get down into the city. We have listened! Many of you may have visited the new store over the past few weeks during our soft opening, but we are finally ready to blow the doors open and make our presence known. Come out on the 12th to see the new store. Bring a mouthpiece to play a horn, bring a reed to play a mouthpiece, or just bring yourself! Please note that our regular location on Cherokee St will be closed that day.

To go along with the opening of our new store, we are finally able to unveil the Saxquest Woodwind Teaching Institute. This studio will offer lessons for players of all ages and levels, from beginner to advanced, from some of the top musicians and teachers in the area. We will begin by offering lessons for all of the woodwind instruments, but this may grow to include brass and string in the future. With flexible times available at both the West and Cherokee St locations, and competitive rates, we hope you give us a shot to help this program grow. In addition to your weekly lesson, opportunities to perform in ensembles and recitals with your peers will be available. Program director Elliot Russo will be on hand at the Saxquest West Grand Opening to answer any questions.

Another new, exciting offering by Saxquest will be our new rental program. We’ve been hesitant to offer rentals in the past, but again, a strong demand from our customers has brought us around. Starting around the end of August or beginning of September, you will finally be able to rent saxophones and clarinets. For those sax players out there, we will be offering our own Saxquest brand saxophones. The Saxquest saxophone will come in two varieties, with a beginner model for new players, and a better intermediate model for advancing students. These horns won’t yet be on hand at the Grand Opening, but we hope you come back later and check them out. As always, violin and string rentals are still available through Top Notch Violins at the Saxquest West location.

More immediate, our next monthly local showcase will feature St Louis Symphony saxophonist Jeffrey Collins and his quartet. This event will be on August 5, from 2pm – 4pm, at Saxquest on Cherokee. If you want to see some serious technical ability on the saxophone, you won’t want to miss this one! More details to follow very soon.

Finally, mark your calendars for the second annual Saxquest Expo. This year it will fall on Saturday, November 11, at the Sheraton Westport Chalet in Westport Plaza (same location as last year). We had a tremendous turnout last year, and we hope everyone who came, will do so again, and bring your friends! Once again, we will have representatives from all of the major companies showcasing instruments, mouthpieces, and accessories for all woodwind instruments. This is something that we hope continues to grow, so your support will be appreciated. Even if you have no immediate plans to purchase a new instrument, you won’t find a better place in the area to try so many different models at the same location. I promise it will be a good time!

That’s all the news I’ve got. Check back for more details about these events as they get closer, and we hope to see you at Saxquest West on August 12.

Saxquest Free Concert Artist Series – Antonio HART – Saturday June 3

Saxquest is thrilled to partner with Jazz St. Louis – Jazz at the Bistro to welcome internationally renown saxophonist, composer, and educator, Antonio Hart, this Saturday (6/3) from 2-4pm. Mr. Hart will be performing with a small ensemble being assembled by the great pianist, Phil Dunlap. Hart’s depth of experience seems limitless as he has performed worldwide and recorded more than 100 albums with such eminent jazz artists as Nat Adderley, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ray Brown, Cyrus Chestnut, Dizzy Gillespie, Slide Hampton, Jimmy Heath, Dave Holland and many more. Hart’s 1997 release, “Here I Stand,” was nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. The opportunity to host Antonio Hart live at Saxquest seems almost a dream, except for the fact that its really happening! Make sure you’re a part of it, THIS SATURDAY!!

In The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band I’ve had the opportunity to sit in the second alto saxophone chair next to the likes of Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, and the Great Frank Wess. These teachers gave me a wealth of knowledge that I know could not be learned in school. – Antonio Hart

Antonio Hart has been long recognized as one of the most talented instrumentalist of his generation. In recent years he has also been recognized as an important jazz educator. He has performed and recorded with many jazz greats from Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Hargrove, Nancy Wilson, Nat Adderley, and McCoy Tyner to Dave Holland. Hart’s study of Jazz began at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, he studied with Bill Pierce, Andy McGhee and Joe Viola. The three teachers gave him the foundation he needed to develop into a professional musician. Because of the lessons learned at the Baltimore School for the Arts, Hart really thought it was important to have a balance between music and academia, so in his sophomore year he became a Music Education Major. He made many friends at Berklee, but the most important was Roy Hargrove. They spent three years touring the world and recording Hargrove’s first three records. Hart considers Hargrove to be his brother in life and music. He even used Hargrove on his first recording “For the First Time”. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Hart also worked on a Master’s Degree at Queens College. There he had the opportunity to learn from the great Jimmy Heath and Donald Byrd. Hart felt blessed and honored when Mr. Heath produced his second recording “Don’t You Know I Care.” His 1997 release, ‘Here I Stand’ Impulse records, earned Hart a 1997 Grammy nomination for “Best Jazz Instrumental Solo’ He has also been in much demand as a guest on over 100 recordings, and seven CDs as a leader. The latest, ‘All we Need’ Chiaroscuro Records. After 12 years at Queens College Hart was promoted to Full Professor. Hart also maintains an extensive performance schedule and continues to conduct workshops and clinics throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He feels very blessed to have the balance of teaching, as well as, traveling around the world. In his off time, he practices martial arts, and listens to other styles of music for inspiration. Hart is constantly trying to honor his many teachers by continuing to study music and teach to the best of his ability.
